Maharajah Duleep Singh’s photographs of New Buckenham
Prince Frederick Victor Duleep Singh (23 January 1868 – 15 August 1926) was the surviving heir to Sir Duleep Singh, the exiled Maharajah of the Sikh Empire. Also known as ‘Freddy’, he was educated at Eton and Cambridge becoming interested in archaeology and was a member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Duleep Singh lived as a well-connected country gentleman at Old Buckenham Hall 1897-1906 and finally at Blo’ Norton Hall. He was a keen photographer, capturing local scenes. The Archive is proud to display his photographs of New Buckenham from the collection of Peter Bance, the Sikh historian. These views of the village could easily have been taken on a single day’s outing, just a short distance from Old Buckenham Hall. The view of the Vicarage shows the rear extension that was built in 1901, so one could speculate that the photographs were taken 1901-1906.
Castle Hill Road (Almshouses on right) and Vicarage. Theses views have been taken from the same spot, looking in different directions.
View up Chapel Street and along King Street. These views also could have been taken from the same spot a few metres east to those above.
